THE CHAMPION, Freddie Mercury
oil on canvas panel / 35 x 24 cm. / 2017
I decide to start a serie of paintings about music’s icons on the 25th anniversary of his death. “We Are The Champions” is a hymn. Theatrical and brilliant, there had never been another frontman like Mercury. The band “Queen” was an unique band thanks to him, Queen begins and ends with Freddie. His triumphs and failings were the band’s identity. He was a champion in a hard generation, a subversive avowal of gay forbearance, even when the AIDS won the battle.
“The Champion” is now on view in the exhibition at the Coffee Wake Cup in Clapham Common, London.
